Day 8 Fern Grotto, More Games & Dukes

Day 8, Sunday I'm sorry to say that all the traveling finally got to Ally. She was not her usual self today. She had a runny nose and was tired. I gave her an allergy pill in the morning and I don't think that helped. I think it made her feel so tired and grumpy. But despite this we had a fun day.

Phil and Suzie recalled a boat ride to a fern grotto as one of their "have to do" on Kauai things. So we did it. It was relaxing, very low key and fun. It was about 90 minutes long, we rode in a bot about 30 minutes up the only navigable River in the entire state of Hawaii. Then got out walked to the fern grotto, listed to the band play music and watched some hula dancing, then got back in the boat. More music and dancing on the way back.

Ally and Aunt Suzie watching the baby chicks while we waited to board the boat.

Riding up rivier.

Group pictures in front of the fern grotto. A grotto is a shallow cave with water. This grotto was pretty famous years ago, a popular spot for weddings etc. but a hurricane about 12 years ago and  torrential rainstorm that lasted 42 days 10 years ago eroded away a lot of cave and the ferns are not as plentiful. It was beautiful to us.

Watching hula

On the ride back down river we all stood up and learned some hula dancing!

After the boat ride we went to Hilo Hattie's the only thing we bought was pearls for Ally. She picked out an oyster and had it cracked open. Hers was twins! She got two pearls.

For dinner we ate at the famouse Duke's.

Becky had another Mai Tai. This one so big she couldn't lift the full glass for a toast.

Ally had a strawberry milkshake.

I actually took pictures of food too, because the presentation with the orchid was so pretty.

Grandma Barbie should be happy to know that Becky had Mahi Mahi its not grouper, but still good according to Becky.

Silly Ally and Mommy.

We had a coupon for a free Hula Pie. It's macadamia nut ice cream with Oreo crust and chocolate sauce and macadamia nuts. It was good. We split it.

Of course more games after dinner.

And reading with Gruncle before bed.
