Paper Mache

I volunteered to help out in Ally’s classroom today (along with 14 other parents and grandparents) to assist the 25 first graders with making paper mache projects. They are learning about Antarctica and next week will be giving oral presentations on a subject they chose. They are group projects – Ally chose Emperor Penguin (Oscar and Jaylinne are her fellow “experts”) other topics are; the albatross, a skua (a bird), the blue whale, and 2 kinds of seals. Then a couple students chose an Icebreaker Boat – pretty neat!

Here are some pictures of the day:

Ally with her animal “structure” it’s a small plastic juice bottle for the body, a tiny balloon for the head, all taped together with 2 cardboard wings and 2 cardboard feet.

Then it was time to apply the paper mache. Ally and Jaylinne were dip the paper in the mache material, Oscar’s mom Monique is demonstrating how you “slide the paper thru your fingers to make sure there is not too much on the paper strip. Then we would apply the strip and smooth it out.

Elena is holding up the Albatross before it was paper mached (left) and then 2 parents and Bleuet are working on a seal.

Its hard to see but at left is the Skua bird, and then on the right is Ally’s baby emperor penguin. She is very proud of it.

Eric worked on the team that did the icebreaker boat. It was huge!

It was a really fun time. I had never paper mached before and was a bit nervous about it. But the animals turned out pretty good.
