Chicks!

All Spring Ally's class has been talking about eggs - I've posted some of the egg related projects. Well 22 days ago one teacher got eggs from a local farm and an incubator and brought them to school. Every day one of the student jobs is to be the egg counter and he or she marks off on the chart one day so that they keep track until 21 days is over - 21 days and the eggs were due to hatch. Today was day 22 and there were 2 chicks! It was pretty neat. I got to school to pick Ally up and found out that 1 was born during the night and there was a 2nd one ready to come out, any minute. So we waited and watched along with several teachers and one other school friend and we got to see the little one push its way out of the shell.
Ally is pointing to the cracked egg where the chick is trying to get out.

The oldest chickie!

Ally was so interested and watched patiently and was super thrilled to see it pop its head out of the shell.

2 little chicks - hopefully more will hatch tonight and tomorrow. After they hatch and have a chance to fluff up in the incubator they will be moved to a nest the class made for the chicks to live in until they go back to the farm.
I am constantly amazed at this school. Eggs and chicks were not part of some master lesson plan. The children were so interested in eggs that one teacher went ahead and got these eggs and the necessary equipment for the class to take care of the eggs and now the chicks. It is fantastic to see what these pre-school minds come up with and how well they flourish and learn when they are the ones driving the curriculum.
