Italy Day 2: Venice

We started with a great breakfast at the hotel and then walked to San Marco Square to visit St Mark’s Basilica. Doge’s Palace was after that and by then Ally was fading fast from not enough sleep. She and I rested on a bench the shade at Doge’s while Beth and Becky toured the palace. Ally and I headed back to the hotel after that. Becky and Beth stayed out and walked around Venice for a while.  It was pretty hot and humid.

Ally was so happy there were pancakes for breakfast.

This is right outside our hotel. Very sunny which is why Ally is squinting.

Everywhere you look the scenery is gorgeous.

San Marco Square!

Inside Doge’s Palace

Ally took this amazing picture. The composition of light and the stone are fantastic.

While we sat and rested we spotted Becky and Beth across the courtyard.

Ally.

Becky and Beth coming to meet us. We split up then and this next set of pictures are theirs from inside the palace.

They walked thru the Bridge of Sighs.

The view of Venice from the bridge. It is named the Bridge of Sighs because it leads to the dungeon and prisoners would sigh at their last look of breathtaking Venice.

Beth, outside looking up at the Bridge of Sighs.

Becky in the weapons room.

Sisters! We are so glad Beth is with us on this trip.

Beth took the panoramic picture below and while she did Becky photobombed it. Hilarious.

When they got back to the hotel they were pretty hot and sweaty.

Which you can see from Becky’s sweaty back.

Lunch! And then a meringue for Ally as we walked towards the Rialto bridge.

The Rialto bridge. It was so crowded we didn’t get any closer than this. And it was starting to rain.

Aunt and niece in front of the Grand Canal.

Raining enough we needed the umbrellas Beth brought from Boston. This is my favorite picture of the day!
We meandered back to our hotel and after a break Beth and I went out and visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Lots of modern art.

We stopped for espresso and gelato on the way back.

Ally and I ate leftover pizza in our room for dinner. It was delicious heated up on the stove. And Becky and Beth went out for dinner and then had drinks at a swanky restaurant on the Grand Canal and watched the sunset.

It was a fantastic day in Italy.
